Exploring the Northern Territory’s energy future at the NT Resources Week

How can the Northern Territory seize its role in the growing green hydrogen and ammonia markets?

Powering Australia’s NT Node Leader, Scott Groom, recently attended NT Resources Week in Darwin, where key voices from the resources and energy sectors highlighted global shifts in gas markets, the energy transition and the opportunities for the Northern Territory in a low-carbon future.

Discussions focused on Asia’s increasing demand for low-emission fuels including green hydrogen and ammonia, and the innovative projects such as Climate Impact Corporation’s modular developments in the NT that enable rapid deployment while minimising environmental and cultural impacts.

Dr. Nigel Rambhujun from Rystad Energy highlighted that Asian markets are rapidly advancing in green hydrogen and ammonia. Ammonia and methanol are becoming cost competitive as shipping fuels, and green premium costs are falling in markets like India and Korea.

These trends point to significant export opportunities for the Northern Territory as a key hub for low-emission energy and industrial decarbonisation in Australia’s low-carbon future.
