BUILDING AUSTRALIA'S BATTERY INDUSTRY
Australia is poised to become a global leader in carbon solutions. The country leverages vast lands for nature-based sequestration, world-class geological storage, and advanced measurement technologies to build a thriving carbon ecosystem. With growing demand for high-quality credits, Australia invests in projects and services that capture value across nature-based solutions, capture technologies, and enabling infrastructure to support hard-to-abate industries.
SECTOR OVERVIEW
Australia's carbon industry has strong foundations. It includes innovative companies working across nature-based solutions, carbon capture and storage, carbon capture utilisation and storage, and measurement, reporting and verification. Despite this, the sector faces challenges that slow progress. These include the pace of method development, measurement costs, and compliance requirements.
The industry focuses on key technologies such as plantation forestry, geological storage, and satellite monitoring. Its core activities range from generating Australian Carbon Credit Units to permanent CO2 storage for point-source emitters. Projects like Gorgon demonstrate Australia's growing carbon infrastructure.
While high upfront costs and regulatory hurdles pose challenges, government backing and private investment help the sector grow. This growth could create 155,795 jobs and contribute $28.4 billion to Australia's economy by 2050.
MAKING IT HAPPEN
We support Australia's entire carbon ecosystem, from project development and manufacturing to deployment of next generation carbon solutions. Acting as connectors, we map the carbon sector from forestry to CCS, linking organisations nationwide and driving collaboration.
Through programs like Horizon 2035, we enhance standards, showcase industry advances, and help technologies reach the market. We also connect Australian companies with global resources to support scaling.
Alongside training providers, we help train the skilled workforce essential for the sector's growth. Our international network attracts trade and investment, while partnerships across research and industry accelerate scalable carbon solutions from ACCUs to permanent storage.
